Travel:
There is no overland access to Iquitos, which is said to be the largest city in the world that can be reached only by air or boat.
- By Air
The conference venue is only about seven km away from Iquitos airport. COPA (www.copaair.com) provides direct air service twice a week from Panamá to Iquitos. Many other international airlines serve Lima, the capital of Perú, from which you can connect on an approximately 90 minute flight to Iquitos via Peruvian Airlines, (www.peruvian.pe), Star Peru (www.starperu.com.), or LAN (www.lan.com).
Direct air service is also available between Iquitos and Tarapoto, a city in the high jungle, and Pucallpa, a port on the Ucayali River.
- By Boat
From Pucallpa, Peru: Lanchas y Motonaves Henry offers voyages in mixed cargo/250 passenger vessels. Travel time is approximately five days, depending upon the water regime and direction of travel. One-way fares (including meals) are approximately $US 35 per person for passengers sleeping on the deck in hammocks. Cabins are also available for about twice the hammock rate.
From Tres Fronteras (Santa Rosa, Peru/ Leticia, Colombia/Tabatinga, Brazil): Several different companies including Transtur (transturperu@bol.com.br) and Golfinho (www.transportegolfinho.com)-provide nearly-daily service in 48-passenger ¨rapido¨ boats, with airplane-style seating. Journey time is approximately 9 to 12 hours, varying with the water regime and direction of travel. One-way fare (including meals) is about $US 75 per person.
Connections are available from Tres Fronteras to Manaus, Brazil, and farther downstream to the mouth of the Amazon River at the Atlantic Ocean.
Weather:
- Situated at 106 meters above sea level, and about four degrees south of the Equator, Iquitos enjoys a wet, humid, tropical climate, characterized by warm temperatures with limited annual thermal variation. August is usually one of the driest months with few rainy days, and temperatures ranging from a high of about 31 °C / 88 °F to a low of 21 °C / 69 °F. Transportation:
- Local transportation: Motorcars are more common than conventional taxis in the city of Iquitos. The LOC will provide transportation from the main hotels to the venue and return. Additional requests will be handled individually. Most of the field and tourist options involve boat trips on the Amazon River and its tributaries.
